okctl upgrade does not attempt to upgrade the EKS cluster, because there can be manual, cluster specific changes that need to be done before upgrading.
To upgrade, you need to follow this guide:
We will be happy to help if you have any issues with doing the upgrade. Contact us on Slack.
See: https://docs.aws.amazon.com/eks/latest/userguide/kubernetes-versions.html (search for "Amazon EKS Kubernetes release calendar").
These are final deadlines. We strongly recommend upgrading EKS in good time before the deadlines, in order to give time to troubleshooting should anything happen.
About EKS upgrades
Every few months, AWS bumps the version of available EKS/Kubernetes, and ends the ability to create new clusters with old versions.
This means users of EKS continously need to upgrade their EKS clusters.
To enable Okctl users to do this with as much help as possible, we have created (see link above)
- A README that guides the user through the process of upgrading the EKS cluster
- A script that executes the upgrade. If you want more control, you can simply copy and paste commands from this script.
